Bei openSUSE handelt es sich um eine Linux-Distribution der SuSE GmbH, die auch in Deutschland weit verbreitet ist. OpenSUSE richtet sich vor allem an Privatpersonen und ist äußerst benutzerfreundlich und stabil.

OpenSUSE ist ein vollwertiges Desktop Betriebssystem, und bietet Software für Office, Bildbearbeitung, Mail, Internet und Spiele.

SuSE stand ursprünglich für Gesellschaft für Software- und Systementwicklung und wurde bereits 1992 gegründet. Damals konnte man die erste Linux Version schon herunterladen, obwohl kaum jemand Internetzugang hatte. Ab April 1994 wurde die SuSE Linux Version auf CD, komplett auf deutsch übersetzt und mit eigenem Installer, zum Verkauf angeboten.

Komplett Open-Source: openSUSE

Im Jahr 2006 mit Version 10.2 wurde der Namen von SUSE Linux in openSUSE geändert, um noch mehr den Open-Source-Charakter auszudrücken. openSUSE wird von einer Community entwickelt und mittlerweile in einem acht-monatigen Rhythmus weiterentwickelt und aktualisiert. Im Zuge dessen arbeiten Entwickler aus der ganzen Weil gemeinsam an der Weiterentwicklung, unter anderem Tester, Übersetzer, Usability-Experten und Entwickler.

Die Philosophie wird durch die openSUSE-Leitlinien verkörpert. Ein eigener Rat wacht über deren Einhaltung und fungiert als zentrale Anlaufstelle für die verschiedenen Teams. Die Entwickler können sich einmal pro Jahr auf der openSUSE-Konferenz oder auf der Hackweek treffen und dort auszutauschen.

Software und Installer für openSUSE

Es wird eine Version angeboten, die komplett ohne proprietäre Software auskommt und vollständig Open-Source ist, sowie eine Version mit proprietärer Software, wie Adobe Reader und Flash Player.

OpenSUSE verfügt über ein eigenes Setup Tool mit Namen YaST (englisch für „Yet another Setup Tool“, also noch ein weiteres Einrichtungswerkzeug), welches die zentrale Schnittstelle des ganzen Betriebssystems ist. Ein großer Vorteil von openSUSE ist die LSB-Zertifizierung (Linux Standard Base), die eine bessere Kompatibilität zwischen verschiedenen Linux-Distributionen haben soll. Dadurch können Nutzer unter openSUSE eine relative große Zahl verschiedener Programme nutzen.

Für openSUSE werden mehrere Arbeitsumgebungen angeboten, zum Beispiel GNOME, KDE Plasma Workspace, Xfce oder Fenstermanager.

Besonders praktisch sind die in openSUSE integrierte SUSE-Support-Datenbank und SUSE-Component-Datenbank. Hier werden umfassende Informationen zur Konfiguration und Installation von Hardware am Linux System bereitgestellt, die auch von Nutzern anderer Distributionen gerne genutzt werden.
